A Clamp-on Meter is an electrical device having two jaws which open to allow clamping around an electrical conductor. This allows properties of the electric current in the conductor to be measured, without having to make physical contact with it, or to disconnect it for insertion through the probe. Clamp-on Meter's can designed for AC, DC, and AC/DC environments. Comprehensive meters can measure many parameters of electrical energy (power factor, distortion, instantaneous power as a function of time, phase relationships, etc.). They can also have multimeter capability.
