ACTERNA OLA-15B 60 dB Handheld Variable Optical Attenuator

The Acterna OLA-15B is a handy-sized, rugged optical attenuator for single mode applications from 1260 to 1625 nm. Applications include bit error rate tests, determination of system margin and receiver sensitivity, and calibration of optical power meters. The OLA-15B has a large rotary control on the front panel which makes setting of the attenuation quick and easy. Attenuation can be setwithin a wide range from 3 to 60 dB. For high-return loss applications both optical connectors can be provided with an APC (angled physical contact) interface as an option. It can be operated with AC, dry or rechargeable batteries. Specifications. Wavelength Range of use: 1260 to 1625 nm. Wavelength Calibrated at: 1310 and 1550 nm. Attenuation range: 3 to 60 dB. Minimum insertion loss: <= 3 dB. Linearity: ±0.2 dB. Repeatability of attenuation setting: ±0.1 dB. Total attenuation uncertainty: ±0.8 dB. Attenuation display: 4 digit liquid crystal display. Resolution: 0.05 dB. Fiber type: single-mode 9/125mm. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)
A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is a type of distributed Bragg reflector constructed in a short segment of optical fiber that reflects particular wavelengths of light and transmits all others. This is achieved by adding a periodic variation to the refractive index of the fiber core, which generates a wavelength specific dielectric mirror. A fiber Bragg grating can therefore be used as an inline optical filter to block certain wavelengths, or as a wavelength-specific reflector.

Modulation
Modulation is the process by which the characteristic of one wave (the carrier) is modified by another. Adding information into pulses of light.

Power Linearity
When changing the power level and measuring the differences (in dB) between actual and displayed power levels, the power linearity is ± half the span (in dB) between the maximum and the minimum value of all differences.

Stability is the extent to which a specified property, characteristic, or parameter of a substance, device, or apparatus, such as a fiber optic transmission system, remains fixed with the passage of time or with varying environmental conditions.
