   GIGATRONICS 2508B   Description / Specification:
GIGATRONICS 2508B Microwave Signal Generator

The Giga-Tronics 2508B Microwave Signal Generator delivers industry-best offset phase noise performance, high output power, and fast frequency switching speeds in a single unit. Performance features such as high time base stability, frequency modulation (FM), high-speed pulse/square wave modulation (PM), amplitude modulation (AM) and high leveled output power makes it an excellent test solution for a wide range of CW, modulation, swept frequency, and fast frequency switching applications in both R&D and manufacturing environment. The 2500B series Microwave Signal Generator utilizes new Advanced Synthesizer Technology that delivers excellent close in phase noise performance of -77dBc @ 100 Hz and -96dBc @ 1KHz and an ultra low phase noise performance of -109 dBc @ 10 kHz and 100 kHz offset on a 10 GHz carrier frequency. 2508B Features. Frequency range: 2GHz to 8 GHz. Output power: +13 dBm at 50 GHz. Standard Low Phase Noise: -109 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz and 10 kHz offset. Ultra-low close-in Phase Noise option: -90 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz and 100 Hz offset, -70 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz and 10 Hz offset. High Stability Time Base for outstanding frequency accuracy; 0.001 Hz frequency resolution. Excellent Spectral Purity. Harmonics: < -55 dBc. Sub-harmonics: < -60 dBc. Spurious: < -58 dBc. Phase Modulation Rate: 100 Hz to 100 kHz, Peak Dev 10 rad-pk/N. Pulse Burst mode: 1 to 300 pulses/burst, Set pulse width, rep rate and burst period. Power Boost mode option. USB and Ethernet LAN interface. Emulation Modes, now standard on all 2500B series Microwave Signal Generators (not all of the commands are available). Options. 17A - Add Internal and External Modulation Suite (includes internal function generator). 17B - Add External Modulation Suite. 20 - Add High RF Output Power. 26A - Add 90 dB Mechanical Step Attenuator. 22 - Move RF Output Connector to Rear Panel. 27 - Add 110 dB Electronic Step Attenuator. 28 - Add Ultra-Low Close-in Phase Noise. 29 - Add Fast Frequency Switching Speed. 32 - Add Narrow Pulse Width = 100 ns (Requires Option 17A or 17B). 44 - Replace Standard Front Panel with Blank Front Panel (Requires Option 22). 46 - Add Rack Slide Kit.

Channel Bandwidth
Channel Bandwidth is the bandwidth over which power is measured. This is usually the bandwidth in which almost all of the power of a signal is contained.

Jitter
Jitter in technical terms is the deviation in or displacement of some aspect of the pulses in a high-frequency digital signal. Jitter is the time variation of a periodic signal in electronics and telecommunications, often in relation to a reference clock source. Jitter may be observed in characteristics such as the frequency of successive pulses, the signal amplitude, or phase of periodic signals. Jitter is a significant, and usually undesired, factor in the design of almost all communications links (e.g., USB, PCI-e, SATA, OC-48). In clock recovery applications it is called timing jitter.

Overshoot
Overshoot is the distortion that follows a major transition; the difference between the peak power point and the pulse-top amplitude computed as a percentage of the pulse-top amplitude.

Rise Time
Rise time refers to the time required for a signal to change from a specified low value to a specified high value, usually 10 and 90 percent of pulse-top amplitude (vertical display is linear power).
