Keysight (Agilent) 5359A High-Resolution Time Synthesizer

The Agilent 5359A is a Time Synthesizer that produces two extremely precise low-jitter time delays. The delays, Td and Tw, are individualy selectable using the keyboard in 50 ps or greater steps to generate delays of up to 160 ms. This capability makes it useful for applications ranging from calibrating of radar, loran, DME and Tacan Systems, or for precision generation of delayed sweeps in oscilloscopes. The synthesizer features an external and internal trigger mode. In external trigger mode, the delays from the sync out to the beginning of the output pulse, and the width of the output pulse, are selectable. In internal trigger mode the period or frequency and the width of the output pulse are selectable. The delay range using delay Td ranges from 0 ns to 160 ms, and the delay range using Tw ranges from 5 ns to 160 ms (width and delay <= 160 ms). The period for the signal can range from 100 ns or a width of + 85 ns to, to a maximum of 160 ms. The repetition rate has a maximum of 10 MHz. The time delay accuracy is +/- 1 ns +/- time base error; +/- 100 ps +/- time base error after external calibration. Insertion delay is fixed at <150 ns and selectable as <50 ns for delays >100 ns. Jitter is typicaly 100 ps rms, reaching a maximum of 200 ps rms for delays to 10 ms. The external trigger input slope is selectable from -2 V to +2 V. Sync output: 1 V - 50 ohm; 5 V - 1 mega-ohms. 35 ns width nominal. The output pulse amplitude can range from 0.5 V to 5 V into 50 ohms with positive or negative polarity. Offset is selectable from -1 V to 1 V, or can be turned off. The output pulse transition time is <5 ns. External voltage must not be applied. Offset and amplitude voltage into 50 ohms may be displayed. On the rear panel are 2 edge outputs. Output 1 occurs in sync with the leading edge of the output pulse, at the same spec as Sync out, while output 2 is in sync with the falling edge of the output pulse, again with the same spec. as Sync out. The 5359A features an Events Mode, which allows for the substitution of an external input (to 100 MHZ) for the internally-counted clock (delay and width must both be specified in terms of events instead of time). Trigger frequency mode enables the triggering of an output burst synchronised with an external trigger signal, that continues for the duration of the signal. Calibrate mode performs an internal calibration to remove the effects of internal delay differences. External probes output provides signals to control the 5363B probes and accepts inputs from the probes to include external devices in the calibration loop. The time base is composed of a high-stability oven oscillator, with a fundamental frequency of 10 MHz, an aging rate of <5 x 10.0E-10/day and a temperature of 0 to 50 degrees C.

dBc
dBc (decibels relative to the carrier) is the power ratio of a signal to a carrier signal, expressed in decibels. If the dBc figure is positive, then the relative signal strength is greater than the carrier signal strength. If the dBc figure is negative, then the relative signal strength is less than carrier signal strength.

Load Regulation
Load regulation is the capability to maintain a constant voltage (or current) level on the output channel of a power supply despite changes in the supply's load (such as a change in resistance value connected across the supply output).

Power Linearity
When changing the power level and measuring the differences (in dB) between actual and displayed power levels, the power linearity is ± half the span (in dB) between the maximum and the minimum value of all differences.

Settling Time
Settling time of an output device is the time elapsed from the application of an ideal instantaneous step input to the time at which the amplifier output has entered and remained within a specified error band, usually symmetrical about the final value.
