Keysight (Agilent) 71450A 600 to 1700 nm Optical Spectrum Analyzer, MMS

The HP 71450A is a diffraction-grating based optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). It provides unprecedented performance with their outstanding dynamic range, sensitivity, high amplitude and wavelength accuracy, and polarization insensitivity. This instrument performs measurements quickly, especially when high sensitivity is required. Capable of sweeping 40 nm in 50 ms with reduced dead time, the analyzers can save hours of measurement time. In addition, the HP 71450A can be left continually sweeping; you no longer need to stop the sweep to save wear and avoid costly repairs. The HP 71450A includes automatic features. An automeasure function quickly locates the signal, zooms in, and centers the display. An auto-align feature automatically centers the light on the photodiode for optimum amplitude accuracy and removes the need for fiber alignment on the monochromator output. The analyzers include built-in programs for advanced measurement on DFB and Fabry-Perot lasers and LEDs. Wavelength range: 600 nm to 1700. Wavelength Tuning repeatability: ±0.005 nm. Wavelength Span Range: 0.2 nm to full range. Wavelength Absolute Accuracy: ±1 nm. Maximum Sensitivity (1100-1600 nm): –90 dBm.Sweep Time sensitivity in auto, full span: < 0.5 seconds. Input Power, 1 dB compression level within resolution: =10 dBm. Dynamic Range: -50 dB at = ± 1 nm(600 to 1700 nm), -55 dB at = ± 0.5 nm(1250 to 1600 nm). Resolution: 0.08 nm, 0.1 nm, 10 nm (in a 1,2,5 sequence). 1 MB memory and FC/PC connectors are standard. Options. Opt 001 Programmable Current Source. Opt 002 Built-in White Light Source.

Coherence Length
Average distance over which superimposed waves lose their phase relationships

Linewidth
Linewidth is the width of a spectral line in terms of wavelength, wave number and frequency.

Power Flatness Versus Wavelength
When changing the wavelength at constant power setting and recording the differences between actual and displayed power levels, the power flatness is ± half the span (in dB) between the maximum and the minimum of the measured power levels.

Spectral Width
Spectral Width is the wavelength interval over which the magnitude of all spectral components is equal to or greater than a specified fraction of the magnitude of the component having the maximum value. In optical communications applications, the usual method of specifying spectral width is the full width at half maximum. This is the same convention used in bandwidth, defined as the frequency range where power drops by less than half (at most -3 dB).

Telecom Bands
Optical fiber communications typically operate in a wavelength region corresponding to one of the following Bands. O Band (original): 1260–1360 nm. E Band (extended): 1360–1460 nm. S Band (short wavelengths): 1460–1530 nm. C Band (conventional): 1530–1565 nm. L Band (long wavelengths): 1565–1625 nm. U Band (ultralong wavelengths): 1625–1675 nm
