Keysight (Agilent) 8656B   Description / Specification:
Keysight (Agilent) 8656B 990 MHz Synthesized Signal Generator

The HP 8656B is a programmable synthesized signal generator, covering a frequency range of 0.1 to 990 MHz, with a resolution of 10 Hz. It also provides a frequency underrange to 10 kHz with uncalibrated output. The frequency switching speed is <150 ms to be within 100 Hz of final frequency. The phase offset is adjustable in 1 degree increments as well. The 8656B has high stability, with a timebase aging rate of +/-2 ppm/year. The Agilent 8656B has low spurious signals. With an output level of <= +7 dBm, harmonics are < -30 dBc. Non-harmonics (greater than 5 kHz from carrier in CW mode) are < -60 dBc. Residual FM is also minimal, with <7 Hz rms maximum and <2 Hz minimum across ther entire frequency range, in a post detection noise bandwidth of 0.3 to 3 kHz. Residual FM in a 0.05 to 15 kHz noise bandwidth is a maximum of <15 Hz rms and minimum of <4 Hz rms across the entire frequency range. Residual AM in a 0.05 to 15 kHz post detection noise bandwidth is 0.025%. SSB phase noise in CW mode with a 20 kHz offset is a maximum of <-126 dBc/Hz and minimum of <-114 dBc/Hz. The output level range into a 50 ohm load is -127 dBm to 13 dBm, or 17 dBm with uncalibrated output. THe output level resolution is 0.1 dB, and the absolute level accuracy is <+/-1.0 dB in a range of 123.5 to 990 MHz. LEvel flatness is +/-1.0 dB at an output level setting of 0.0 dBm across the entire frequency range. The generator output is protected from up to 50 watts (from a 50 ohm source) to 990 MHz, with a maximum dc voltage level of 25V. Amplitude modulation depth has a range of 0 to 99% up to +7 dBm and 0 to 30% up to +10 dBm, with a resolution of 1%. AM rate can be either 400 Hz and 1 kHz for internal, or 20 Hz to 40 KHz for external. Internal AM distortion rates range from <1.5% from 0 to 30%, <3% at 31 to 70% and <4% at 71 to 90% AM. The AM display accuracy, for depths <90% internal and levels <+7 dBm, is <+/-2% + 4% of reading. THe incidental phase modulation at 30% AM depth and internal rates is <0.3 radians. Frequency modulation peak deviation is a maximum of 99 kHz in AC and DC mode, and a minimum of 50 kHz in AC and DC mode. The internal source FM rate for 400 Hz and 1 kHz is +/-3%. The external source FM rate ranges from dc to 50 kHz when dc coupled, and 20 Hz to 50 kHz when ac coupled. The center frequency accuracy in dc FM mode is <+/-500 Hz, while the stability is <10 Hz/hour. The FM distortion for internal rates is <0.5%. The FM indicator accuracy is +/-5% of reading at internal rates. Incidental AM for a centeer frequency of >=500 kHz with a peak deviation of <20 kHz for internal rates is <0.1%. The Agilent 8656B comes with an HP-IB interface with a wide function range: SH0, AH1, T0, L2, SR0, RL1, pp0, DC1, DT0, C0 and E1. It is also available with 6 options: 001 (high-stability timebase), 002 (RF connectors on rear panel only), 907 (front handle kit), 908 (rack flange kit), 909 (rack flange and front handle kit), 910 (additional operating and service manual.

dBc
dBc (decibels relative to the carrier) is the power ratio of a signal to a carrier signal, expressed in decibels. If the dBc figure is positive, then the relative signal strength is greater than the carrier signal strength. If the dBc figure is negative, then the relative signal strength is less than carrier signal strength.

Load Regulation
Load regulation is the capability to maintain a constant voltage (or current) level on the output channel of a power supply despite changes in the supply's load (such as a change in resistance value connected across the supply output).

Power Linearity
When changing the power level and measuring the differences (in dB) between actual and displayed power levels, the power linearity is ± half the span (in dB) between the maximum and the minimum value of all differences.

Settling Time
Settling time of an output device is the time elapsed from the application of an ideal instantaneous step input to the time at which the amplifier output has entered and remained within a specified error band, usually symmetrical about the final value.
