Keysight (Agilent) 8657A   Description / Specification:
Keysight (Agilent) 8657A 1040 MHz Synthesized Signal Generator

The HP 8657A is a synthesized signal generator with a frequency range of 100 kHz to 1040 MHz as well as underrange to 10 kHz with uncalibrated level and modulation. Frequency resolution is 10 Hz, as is the 8 digit display. Frequency switching speed is typicaly <135 ms to be within 100 Hz of target frequency. The 8657A offers a highly accurate timebase, with a fundamental frequency of 50 MHz, and an aging rate of +/-2 ppm/year, which can be extended to 1.0E-9/day after 45 days by installing option 001. The rear-panel timebase reference signal is available at a level >0.15 Vrms into 50 ohms. An output frequency is selectable via internal jumper between 10, 5 or 1 MHz. If using an external reference, the output will be at the same frequency. The external reference accepts any 10, 5 or 1 MHz (+/-0.002%) frequency standard at a level of >0.15 Vrms into 50 ohms. The Agilent 8657A has low spectral noise. Harmonics occur at a level of <-30 dBc. No subharmonics occur at any frequency. Non-harmonics (CW mode, 5 kHz-2 MHz offsets): -60 dBc, with carrier frequencies of 0.1 to 130 MHz and 520-1040 MHz; -66 dBc with carrier frequencies of 260 to 520 MHz; -72 dBc with carrier frequencies from 130 to 260 MHz. Residual FM in CW mode and post detection BW from 300 Hz to 3 kHz: 4 Hz for 0.1 to 130 MHz; 1 Hz for 130 to 260 MHz; 2 Hz for 260 to 520 MHZ; 4 Hz for 520 to 1040 MHz. Residual AM is also very minimal: <0.04% AM in a BW of 50 Hz to 1 kHz in CW mode. SSB phase noise with a 20 kHz offset is <-124 dBc/Hz for carrier frequencies of 0.1 to 130 MHz; <-136 dBc/Hz for CF of 130 to 260 MHz; <-130 dBc/Hz for CF of 260 to 520 MHz; <-124 dBc/Hz for CF of 520 to 1040 MHz. The output level can range between +13 dBm and -143.5 dBm into 50 ohm, and +10 dBm to -143.5 dBm for frequencies from 100 kHz to 1 MHz, with a resolution of 0.1 dB. Absolute level accuracy is <+/-1.0 dB from +7 to -127 dBm and <+/-1.5 dB for levels that exceed +7 dBm. Level flatness at o dBm is <+/-0.5 dB. SWR at carrier frequencies >=400 kHz is less than 1.5 for levels <-3.5 dBm and less than 2.0 for levels <=+13 dBm. Reverse power protection goes up to 50W from a 50 ohm source, and DC voltage up to 50 V. Amplitude modulation range goes from 0 to 99% at levels <=+/-7 dBm and carrier frequencies >=400 kHz and 0 to 30% at levels <=+10 dBm and carrier frequencies >=400 kHz. Amplitude modulation resolution is 1%. The internal AM rate can be eiher 400 Hz or 1 kHz +/-2%/ External AM rate can be 20 Hz to 40 kHz (1 dB bandwidth, AC coupled. AM distortion at internal rates: <1.5%, 0 to 30% AM; <3.0%, 30 to 70% AM; <4.0%, 70 to 90% AM. AM indicator accuracy (for depths <90% and internal rates and levls <+7 dBm): <+/-(2% + 6% of setting). Peak incidental phase modulation is <0.3 radians, at 30% AM, at internal AM rates. Frequency modulation maximum peak deviation in AC mode: 99 kHz or 4000 x rate (HZ) for center frequencies 0.1 to 130 MHz; 50 kHz or 1000 x rate (Hz) for CF 130 to 260 MHz; 99 kHz or 2000 x rate (Hz) for CF 260 to 520 MHz; 99 kHz or 4000 x rate (Hz) for CF 520 to 1040 MHz. Frequency modulation resolution for deviations <10 kHz is 100 Hz, and 1 kHz for deviations >=10 kHz. The internal FM rate can be 400 Hz and 1 kHz, +/-2%. Exernal FM rates can be dc/5 Hz to 100 kHz in a 3 dB BW or dc/20 Hz to 50 kHz in a 1 dB BW. Center frequency accuracy in DC mode is <+/-500 Hz, with a stability of <10 Hz per hour. The FM distortion at internal rates and for peak deviations of >=3 kHz is <0.5%. The indicator accuracy at internal rates <+/-5% of setting. Incidental AM for deviations of <20 kHz and frequencies of 400 and 1 kHz with a center frequency over 500 kHz is <0.1%. The Agilent 8657A comes with the HP-IB remote interface and is available with a number of options: 001 (high-stability timebase), 002 (RF connections on rear panel only), 907 (front handle kit), 908 (rack flange kit), 909 (rack flange kit with front handles), 910 (additional operation and calibration manual and two service manuals), 915 (additional service manual), W30 (extended repair service), W32 (calibration se

Pricing does include NIST traceable calibration and issue of a calibration certificate and calibration label. Pricing may vary slightly due to volume and location of laboratory supporting calibration. Volume pricing may apply. On-site fees may apply depending on logistics, location and volume of work to be completed during the visit.

Average Power
Average power means that the energy transfer rate is to be averaged over many periods of the lowest frequency involved. For a CW signal, the lowest frequency and highest frequency are the same, so average power and power are the same. For an amplitude modulated wave, the power must be averaged over many periods of the modulation component of the signal as well.

Dynamic range
Dynamic range the ratio of a specified maximum level of a parameter, such as power, current, voltage or frequency, to the minimum detectable value of that parameter.

Modulation
Modulation is the process by which the characteristic of one wave (the carrier) is modified by another.

Repeatability
Repeatability is the variation in a number of repeated measured quantities when measurement conditions are changed and restored. The value corresponds to half the spread between the minimum and maximum value measured.
