Keysight (Agilent) 8702B 6 GHz Lightwave Component Analyzer

The HP 8702B lightwave component analyzer measures each of the transmission elements of a high-speed fiber optic system. The instrument analyzes swept frequency signals modulating an 850, 1300, or 1550 nm optical carrier. Modulation frequency range is 300 kHz to 3 GHz or, optionally, to 6 GHz. The HP 8702B makes calibrated measurements of bandwidth, responsivity, and modulation range of electro-optical components, such as LEDs, lasers, APDs, PIN photodiodes, and modulators. The HP 8702B can measure the bandwidth, insertion loss, delay, and gain or loss of a complete fiber optic transmission system. System level measurements can then be related back to individual component measurements to locate and improve the weakest elements. The HP 8702B lightwave component analyzer includes an RF source that provides a swept, synthesized test signal, and an RF receiver that measures magnitude and phase of the transmitted signal. The analyzer uses a lightwave source and receiver to measure components in the optical domain. Standard configuration is an HP 8702B, an RF interface kit, a lightwave source, a lightwave receiver, and fiber cable. For reflection measurements, a lightwave coupler is required. Specifications based on Lightwave Source Modules and Lightwave Receiver Modules. Options. Opt 006, 6 GHz Receiver Operation (requires HP 85047 A S-Parameter Test Set). Opt 011, Delete Time Domain Capability Opt 804, Delete Dual Disk Drive and HP-IB Cable.

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)
A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is a type of distributed Bragg reflector constructed in a short segment of optical fiber that reflects particular wavelengths of light and transmits all others. This is achieved by adding a periodic variation to the refractive index of the fiber core, which generates a wavelength specific dielectric mirror. A fiber Bragg grating can therefore be used as an inline optical filter to block certain wavelengths, or as a wavelength-specific reflector.

Modulation
Modulation is the process by which the characteristic of one wave (the carrier) is modified by another. Adding information into pulses of light.

Power Linearity
When changing the power level and measuring the differences (in dB) between actual and displayed power levels, the power linearity is ± half the span (in dB) between the maximum and the minimum value of all differences.

Stability
Stability is the extent to which a specified property, characteristic, or parameter of a substance, device, or apparatus, such as a fiber optic transmission system, remains fixed with the passage of time or with varying environmental conditions.
