   EXFO FTB-5523 (FTB 5523)   Description / Specification:
EXFO FTB-5523 Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) Analyzer Module

The Exfo FTB-5523 PMD Analyzer module uses a Michelson interferometer to accurately measure PMD delay. It performs a mean measurement over the entire wavelength range of a broad-spectrum polarized LED source. After fitting the Gaussian distribution curve, the analysis software calculates and displays the fiber’s total PMD and second-order PMD value and coefficient. Averaging PMD over the entire source wavelength range (without filtering) preserves full power for PMD measurement. The standard 40 dB dynamic range remains available for testing long fiber spans. A high dynamic range option, using EXFO’s M-2100 Broadband Light Source, a high-power EELED source, increases the dynamic range to more than 50 dB to measure fiber spans longer than 250 km. Particularly important in multichannel transmission, second-order PMD is derived from the measured PMD value. Exfo’s software provides second-order PMD delay and coefficient values for telecom fibers. These values allow you to characterize fibers and cables more precisely than simple PMD and better control the transmission quality of high-speed systems. Specifications. Wavelength: 1310/1550 nm. Analysis Measurement range is 0.1 to 115 ps with a calculated value lower than 0.1 ps and estimated value higher than 115 ps: standard 0.05 to 35 ps, extended range option 0.05 to 200 ps. Dynamic range: 32 dB (40 dB with the M-2100 Broadband Light Source.). Average measuring time: 15 s.

Broadband Source (BBS)
A Broadband Source is a spectrally large source that emits a signal which contains a continuous range of frequencies with a broad optical bandwidth (usually 100 nm or more). Sometimes called a white light source, there are two different meanings of this term. Visible white light and a source which does not necessarily emit in the visible spectral region.

Coherence
Coherence is the pattern and or relationships of waves due to phase properties.

Linearity
Linearity is the relative difference between the displayed power ratio, Dx/D0, and the actual (true) power ratio Px/P0 caused by changing the displayed power level from the reference level, D0, to an arbitrary displayed level, Dx.

Power Flatness Over Modulation
When changing the wavelength and modulation frequency, and measuring the differences between actual and displayed power levels (in dB), the power flatness is ± half the span between the maximum and the minimum value of all differences.

Singlemode fiber
Singlemode Fiber has a small core, only about 9 microns, and is used for telephony and CATV with laser sources at 1300 and 1550 nm. It can go very long distances at very high speeds. Both multimode and singlemode fiber have an outside diameter of 125 microns - about 5 thousandths of an inch - just slightly larger than a human hair.
